Both the Charles Henderson and Pike Liberal Arts baseball teams have had successful seasons to this point in each of their classifications, as each have been represented in the ASWA polls for most of the season.

Now, the two schools have something else in common.

The release of the newest ASWA today has both the Trojans and the Patriots ranked No. 1, CHHS of course in 5A, with PLAS being in AISA.

Both teams have made its way up the rankings.

Last week, the Trojans were No. 2 behind Southside-Gadsden while the Patriots were No. 4 with Glenwood at the top spot.

Both the former No 1 teams slid in this week’s poll.

Since April 1, CHHS has gone 2-1, defeating Carroll twice before falling on the road to the Eagles last Friday to bring its overall record to 23-6.

“I talked to the guys about the ranking (on Wednesday) and everyone is excited,” CHHS head coach Derek Irons said. “It is a pretty big deal. Out of the 64 teams, for the sports writers think we are the best is a tremendous honor.”

The coach continued by saying hopefully this will be something that keeps his team focused.

“This is something that we can enjoy but starting (on Thursday) that excitement will be over with.

The Patriots have gone undefeated, going 4-0 including a victory over Glenwood on the road to bring its record to 22-3.

“This is both good and bad news,” PLAS head coach Butch Austin said. “The players have earned it. But not we have to make sure we play like we are the No. 1 team.”

CHHS will be in action today against Rehobeth at home, while PLAS will be in action on Friday against Glenwood, at home.
