On Tuesday night, the Charles Henderson baseball team returned home for the first time in a week and a half.

The Trojans were coming off just its fifth loss of the season, suffered over the weekend to Rehobeth in the Southeast Alabama Invitational, and looking to start this week off on a positive note.

Thanks to strong pitching performances from Nathan Barron, Harrison Reeves and Blake Hutchinson, CHHS was able to make that possible with a 7-2 win over the Trinity Wildcats.

Each pitched two innings, with the exception of Hutchinson, who pitched the final three.

Reeves got the win, giving up just two hits and one run while walking two one and striking out one.

Hutchinson gave up four hits, one run and struck out five.

The lone run Hutchinson gave up took place in the top of the sixth, thanks to a Mark White solo shot.

“I thought all three pitchers did a great job (Tuesday night),” head coach Derek Irons said. “Our bats started off a little slow for us but the guys on the mound really kept us in the game.”

Those three weren’t the only ones helping the Trojans get a victory.

Mitch McLeod was also doing it at the plate as well.

The right fielder led the Trojans with three hits, and drove in three runs as well.

McLeod also stole two bases, one of which was home plate.

“It’s not just about me,” McLeod said.

“Anyone of these guys can do well on the field. “I thought Harrison (Reeves) hit well (Tuesday night) for us – he stepped up for us.

“We do a good job of getting runs when we can,” the senior added.

CHHS was able to take a two-run lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a McLeod double.

Two innings later, Reeves came up to the plate and knocked in two runs with a single, to help give the Trojans a 6-1 lead.

For the game, Reeves finished 2-3 with two RBIs while Chase Connell also finished 2-3 with an RBI.

Nathan Barron and Quay Lawson also added hits for the Trojans.

“It’s nice to have guys that you can count on,” Irons said. “We have a few guys like that on the team and we would like to have everyone at that point where we feel confidant in their ability to make things happen for us.”

After the victory, Irons brought up an important point about how his team has been able to deal with adversity following a loss this season.

“Four out of the five times we have lost, the next game we responded very well,” the coach said.

“We came out (Tuesday night) focused and played well. We not only got wins in four of those five games but we played really good baseball,” he added.

CHHS improved to 21-5 on the season and will look to win two-in-a-row on Thursday night, when the team plays host to Carroll at 5 p.m.
