One Troy woman was arrested Wednesday, after allegedly attempting to bring marijuana into the Pike County Jail.

“Today during visiting hours, we had a female try to bring large amounts of marijuana into the jail,” said Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas.

Tamara Parker, 29, of Troy, now faces charges of promoting prison contraband and possession of marijuana.

Parker regularly visits the jail on permitted days, officials said.

Parker was caught trying to sneak in marijuana, tobacco and cigarette rollers when trying to enter the jail.

Lt. Frank Wheeler said the marijuana is valued at approximately $300.

“It’s not a good thing to bring things into the jail,” Wheeler said.

“She went in to visit not knowing she wasn’t going to go home.”

Wheeler and Thomas attributed her arrest to the observance of jail employees.

“Corrections officers were very alert in being able to local narcotics on the individual,” Thomas said.

“It was very bold of her to try to do this in the Pike County Jail, and we do intend to prosecute her.”

Wheeler said he hopes this arrest will send a message to all visitors of the jail.

“We would hope this would discourage anyone from doing this in the future,” he said.
