On Monday night, Charles Henderson High School paid homage to its basketball teams and their seasons this past winter.

On hand as a guest speaker was former Trojan coach Eddie McCarter, who was with CHHS for nine seasons and took the team to the state finals in 1985.

“I am very happy to be back,” he told the crowd. “Some of my best days and some of my best basketball memories took place right in – and I am thankful for everything that everyone has done for me.”

After McCarter finished his speech, both basketball coaches, Dynesha Jones and Carl Hollis talked about their respective seasons and players.

“We had a tough year,” Jones said. “But there were a lot of young girls on this team and I am looking forward to the future.”

Senior Cameron Debose was awarded the Team Captain and Trojan Awards for the girls, while Niara Shipmon was awarded both the Trojan Award and the Most Valuable Player Award.

The girls’ team had two players named to the Area 3 All-Tournament team in Shipmon and Amiria Blakely.

The boys’ team came up next.

“We had a pretty good season,” Hollis said. “We had a lot of great guys on this team.”

Michael Zachery received the Leading Scorer award while Mike Jones and Mitch McLeod received the Coach’s Award.

There were two boys from the team on the Area 3 All-Tournament team, as both Jabari Brown and Zachery were recognized.
