When each basketball season some teams go through growing pains before it can play at the level it wants.

The Charles Henderson varsity girls squad is one of those teams this season.

After beginning its season with four-straight losses, the Trojans have begun to turn the corner, winning two of its last three games.

“Things are going well,” head coach Dyneshia Jones said during the Trojans’ practice Thursday afternoon.

“We are still in a learning process – but things are starting to turn around for us.”

All is not lost though on the team, despite the slow start.

“When have been practicing a lot on correcting out mistakes.

“I have talked to the girls a lot about [the team’s mistakes] and we have watched a lot video of our games.

“Everything is beginning to come together now, we are starting to show a lot of progress,” the coach added. “We have gotten better at everything from shooting to free throws.”

Of the 13 players on the team, eight of them are underclassman.

The Trojans’ roster only has two seniors, Biagio Brinson and Cameron Debose, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing according to the coach.

“We have the kind of players a team needs to be successful,” Jones said.

“We have ball handlers, we have shooters and we have some height, it’s just a matter of us being smart during games and seeing the floor.”

Another aspect that Jones likes about this year’s team is how the girls react around each other.

“This team has great chemistry,” Jones said. “And that is very important.”

“They are all buddy-buddy together but when they are on the court that want to make each other better – and that may be our greatest strength.”

The team’s last game took place on Dec. 4, a loss against Jeff Davis.

Its next game however is not until Dec. 18, against Barbour County.

While come coaches may not like the idea of that much time off between games, Jones believes that time will help her team be better prepared.

“Time away from games will help us get better,” the coach said.

“Players always need to learn and this will be a good time for us to do so.”

Even with five losses already this season, Jones believes once the second season rolls around, her team will be ready – because of those early losses.

“It’s never good to lose games, but lessons were learned from those losses,” Jones said.

“We have played some tough competition so far this season but it will get us ready for what really matters which is area play.

“That is the part of the season that really counts and by that time, we will be in contention,” the coach added.
