Springfield Baptist Church near Brundidge will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sept. 20, with morning Homecoming services and a celebratory meal. All of those with ties to the church are invited to be a part of this milestone event.

The Homecoming music service will begin at 10 a.m. with special music by Derek Snellgrove, a gospel and contemporary singer from Jack. Guest minister for the 11 a.m. Homecoming worship service will be Rev. Robert Thornton of Southside.

A special feature of the Homecoming service will be presentations by representatives from the Alabama Baptist Historical Society and the Salem Troy Baptist Association.

A shared meal in the fellowship hall will immediately follow the worship service.

The Homecoming service will be the initial service of the fall revival, which will be Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 21-23.

Springfield is a member church of the Salem Troy Baptist Association and was organized as “The Baptist Church of Christ at Springfield” on December 10, 1859.

According to church records, W.H. Adams gave two and a half acres of land to the church plus 50 feet of road right-of-way.

Services were held once a month in the first church building that measured 41x36x14 feet. Church pastors often served more than one church and that was the practice at Springfield.

“Even though some portions of the church minutes have been lost, a rich heritage can be seen,” said Mildred Blanton, church member. “Many souls have been added to the kingdom of Jesus Christ and many more have had their lives enriched because of the dedication and love of the Savior by both past and present members. The church body today is as loving and friendly as can be found anywhere.”

Blanton said no less than six men are known to have been ordained to the gospel ministry and one missionary has been commissioned and now serves in Asia.

The Rev. Kenneth Baggett is now serving as pastor and Jason Clifford is serving as worship and youth leader.

“While the church’s founders would recognize the Gospel as preached, they would not recognize the present structure,” Blanton said. “It has been rebuilt, remodeled and expanded. Two fellowship halls and a number of Sunday school classrooms are regularly used.”

The newest pastorium is a modern residence and a 15-passenger van has been donated to the church by Willie and Virginia Bryan. Repaving of the parking lot was recently completed and installation of stained glass windows in the sanctuary is under way.
