The Charles Henderson cross-country teams was in action on Thursday at the Troy Sportsplex as the Trojans ran against four other schools.
The boys’ team finished in second place, with 46 points, losing to North View by 23 points.
The girls’ team finished first in the event with 23 points, beating the North View girls, who finished with 74 points.
“It was a pretty good race, even with the rain,” CHHS head coach Steve Haug said.
“I think the rain may have actually cooled things down for the runners during the race.”
The top runners for the CHHS boys were Douglas McClendon and Andrew Bentley, who ran a 21:01 and a 21:02, respectively.
North View’s Ryan Overstreet and Shawn Kent won the boy’s race with the scores of 17:45 and 20:38.
For the CHHS girls, Sharlie Brooks finished with the best overall time of 23:57.
Her teammates Emily Melton and Faith Spivey finished with times of 27:33 and 28:15.
“We have a young group of kids running for us this season,” Haug said.
“I feel we are coming around though. The more we run the better.”
Haug said running at the Sportsplex is a good way to get his teams ready for the upcoming season and courses because of its terrain.
“Our home course is pretty tough,” he said. “It is pretty hilly.”
“We wanted it to be tough though, so that when we race on other courses, they are not as difficult.”
Last Saturday at North View, the boys’ team finished in 3rd place while the girls’ team finished in 2nd place.
“I feel that we are remaining pretty consistent, which is good,” the coach said.
“There is a lot these two teams will learn in the coming weeks and I expect them to continue to improve.”
