The late Elder Paul Wingard was born in Pike County, Alabama on February 13, 1941. He was the youngest of six siblings born to Lomax and Jennett Pouncey Wingard. He departed this life on the morning of April 22, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and two brothers, James Edward Wingard and Willie Mack Wingard.
He confessed Christ at an early age and attended the Church of
God in Christ, Luverne, Alabama; however, he frequently visited Macedonia CME Church. He was united in holy matrimony to Katherine Blair on December 16, 1970 and to this union, they were blessed with two daughters.
Elder Paul Wingard was educated in Pike County School Systems.
He was employed by Farmers and Merchants National Bank, which later became First Alabama Bank, and now is known as Regions Bank. Elder Paul Wingard worked at the bank thirty-five years.
He was one of the first African Americans employed by this corporation in our area. He would often joke that he had his own bathroom and water fountain labeled ‘colored only.’
Elder Paul Wingard retired from Regions Bank in the year 2002 and then he devoted one hundred percent of his time to the ministry.
Elder Paul Wingard pastored the McClure Town Church of God in Christ for twenty-four years.
He was a faithful elder to the local, district, and the Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Alabama COGIC until God called him home.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a most loving wife, Katherine
Wingard; two beautiful daughters, Janet Wingard and Paulette (Elder
Robert) Lee; one grandson, Nicholas Lomax Cooper; two special and devoted little friends, DerTaytavis and Daniella Canty; one loving and devoted brother, Elder William Olice (Kittie) Wingard, Lithonia, Georgia; two loving and devoted sisters, Eula (Herbert) Pruitt, Helicon, Alabama, and Missionary Inez Smiley, Sanford, Florida; two sisters-in-law, Sally Blair, Marianna, Arkansas, and Bee Wingard, Boston, Massachusetts; one brother-in-law, Andrew Blair, Oberlin, Ohio; two uncles, Willie (Lucille) Thomas Pouncey of Shady Grove, Alabama, and B.
