The rain has forced the Goshen Lady Eagles to cancel many games this season and as a result the Lady Eagles had not played a Class 2A, Area 5 game yet. But that all changed Tuesday when they destroyed area foe Highland Home in Goshen, 10-0 in six innings.

“We had a great pitching performance out there and it is always good to get that first area win,” GHS head coach Dee Hughes said.

Amanda Griggs got the start in the circle for the Lady Eagles (11-5, 1-0 AHSAA Class 2A, Area 5) Tuesday and pitched a two-hit shutout. Griggs struck out six batters and walked none.

“It is the first time Amanda has been on the mound in probably three weeks and I was really proud of her to come out in the area game and hold them to two hits,” Hughes said. “She didn’t walk anybody either which is always good.

Hughes said the bats came alive early and often and Goshen put the Lady Flying Squadron in a 6-0 hole by the end of the third inning.

“The key to us being a good hitting team is jumping on them early and we did that tonight,” Hughes said. “It is critical to start off like that. Last week we didn’t have timely hitting, so being able to score two runs in each of the first three innings was big for us.”

The Lady Eagles scored two runs in the first, two in the second and two in the third to lead 6-0.

Goshen tacked on one run in the fourth, one in the fifth and ended the game by mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning with two runs.

Niyoka Slater led the pack with four runs scored and one home run. Griggs also scored one run at the plate. Sidney Sullivan crossed home plate twice and Rachael Senn and Kristen Dease and Samantha Roy each scored one run.

Up next for the Lady Eagles is a home game against Zion Chapel today. The games from today and tomorrow have been switched with Zion Chapel.

Today’s game will be in Goshen and will start at 4 p.m. Tomorrow’s game will now be at Zion Chapel and begin at 4 p.m.
