Brown bag on the square today

The city of Troy will host Brown Bag on the Square today from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and the community is invited to attend this special spring gathering.

“We moved the Brown Bag lunch from Thursday to Tuesday this month to make it more convenient for some of the women’s clubs,” said Catherine Jordan, assistant to the Troy director of tourism. “Those clubs meet on Thursdays so the members aren’t able to attend Brown Bag lunches. We thought it would be a good idea to change the day so they will be able to attend.”

Today’s Brown Bag will feature entertainment by the Charles Henderson High School Jazz Ensemble.

“The jazz ensemble is outstanding and everyone will enjoy hearing these talented young people play,” Jordan said. “We encourage the community to come out and support these outstanding high school musicians.”

Refreshments will be provided by Santa Fe Cattle Company and those who wish to bring a picnic to spread are invited to do so.

“We’ll have a lot of door prizes to give away and many of them will be donated by Steve Flowers,” Jordan said. “We’ll have chairs available and we’ve dialed up pretty weather so it should be a great day.”

Brown Bag events will be held in May and June bringing an end to the spring community lunches on the square.

“Troy is one of the only communities that I know of that has an event like Brown Bag,” Jordan said. “The Brown Bag lunches are an effort to bring people to our downtown area and to showcase the many businesses in downtown Troy. The Brown Bags are a good time for stores and shops to offer specials. We are fortunate that almost all of the stores on the square are occupied. The downtown stores offer a variety of products and services and it’s a convenient and friendly place to shop.”
