Those who have been hankering for a plate of chit’lins, a basket of frog legs or a platter of possum ’n sweet taters need not wait much longer.

On Saturday, March 14, South Montgomery County Academy at Grady will host its 12th annual Wild Game Supper and everyone is invited.

People from north, south, east and west converge on the usually sleepy little community to eat high on the hog and anything else that won’t crawl or hop out of the cook pot, said Stacey Whatley, whose husband, Jeff, heads the school fundraiser.

Whatley said the SMCA cooks will prepare just about anything that you could want on a wild game menu. They’ll have fried quail, alligator, possum, coon, wild hogs, mountain oysters, chit’lins, venison, rabbit stew, squirrel stew and pheasant casserole.

“The pheasant casserole is a favorite wild game dish along with deer rollups,” Whatley said. “The rollups are made with deer sausage and jalapeño peppers wrapped in bacon and cooked on the grill. We usually have a group from Louisiana that comes and they have crawfish and other Cajun ‘wild game.’”

For those who prefer finer dining, the cooks will prepare catfish and chicken with all the trimmings – turnips, rice, cheese grits, green beans, peas, salads and slaw and a long, long table filled with every dessert imaginable.

At 6 p.m. on Saturday, someone will yell “Come and get it!” and wild horses couldn’t keep folks away. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for students.

But, the early birds will get an opportunity see the cooks at work and to enjoy some of the best bluegrass around. The band will kickoff at 4 p.m. and play until around suppertime.

Also at 4 p.m., the silent auction will begin and, on the block, will be a variety of outdoor items, including “musts” for hunters and fishermen and a shooting house. There will be items for the women and children and cakes for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Following the Wild Game Supper, there will be a money draw for a grand prize of $5,000.

“We’ll have a lot going on, a lot of good things to eat and a lot of fun,” Whatley said.

“This is SMCA’s biggest fundraiser of the year and all the money raised supports our general fund. We invite everyone to join us for the 12th Annual Wild Game Supper on Saturday.”
