Enlarged heart likely cause of Pike County teen’s death

Preliminary findings may indicate an enlarged heart or an abnormality in a coronary artery was the cause of death for Pike County High School junior Jarred “Bubba” Snell.

Kim Snell, Jarred’s mother, found him not moving and unresponsive Feb. 18 in their home. Jarred was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead on arrival. The preliminary findings of the Alabama Department of Forensic Science uncovered an enlarged heart and an abnormality in a coronary artery.

But, Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams said the case is not closed.

“We will determine the cause of death after a complete toxicology panel is finished,” Williams said.

Pike County District Attorney Gary McAliley said any time a person dies unattended an autopsy is ordered.

“The main thing we found was that preliminary findings say he died of natural causes,” McAliley said. “He had an enlarged heart and an abnormality in one of his coronary arteries. The doctors with department of forensic science said either one of those conditions would have been enough to cause death.”

McAliley said the final report has not been released, but the DA’s office is not expecting anything other than what has already been found. Snell’s funeral will be held today at 1:30 p.m. in the Pike County High School gymnasium.

Burial will follow the funeral service at the County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Brundidge. Repass will be held at the Galloway Park Community Center.
