‘Shootin’ for Alex Morgan’

Upward Basketball will be “Shootin’ baskets for Alex Morgan” Saturday during league play at First Baptist Church of Troy.
Flyers will be handed out all day explaining the league’s fund-raising effort to help the Morgan family. Alex Morgan is fighting a battle against cancer and Al Renfroe and Keith Sessions wanted to do something to help him fight that battle.
“About halfway through the season, Al and I talked about how it would be nice to raise money for Alex,” Sessions said. “We are just trying to get people to donate and give anything they can.”
All donations will be donated to the Morgan family March 1 during the league’s end-of-the-year celebration in the church sanctuary. All the proceeds from the concession stand this Saturday will also be thrown into the donation.
Sessions said there are four ways to donate to the fund Saturday. Those in attendance can make a simple donation, sponsor a player, sponsor a team or sponsor a game.
The simple donation can be put in the buckets that will be at the scorer’s table and all throughout the Family Life Center during the games.
Sponsoring a player involves donating a set amount of money per points scored for one player Saturday. Sponsoring a team is the same concept, but for the entire team instead of only one player.
And sponsoring a game is also the same concept, but the donation is based on how many points the two teams score combined.
Sessions said he hopes this fund-raising effort helps to show the children in Upward that there is more to life than games.
“While they are all out there struggling to win a game, he (Alex Morgan) is struggling to stay alive,” Sessions said. “We want to make sure they know there is more to life than the game of basketball.”
Sessions said anyone who would like to donate to the cause, but cannot go to the games Saturday could call him at 670-3797 to make a donation.
