Nothing’s final yet, but thanks to the passage of a federal economic stimulus bill, Pike County Schools may have just hit the jackpot.

Based on the economic stimulus bill that passed the House of Representatives Friday, Pike County Schools Superintendent Mark Bazzell said the school system was looking at some $3 million in aide. But, Bazzell said he was unsure if that amount held true for the same bill that passed the Senate Monday.

Bazzell announced in Monday’s school board meeting, he will be researching how these funds may be beneficial to local school systems, but he won’t depend on them solely in a time facing large budget deficits.

“Just because we get this stimulus money doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods,” Bazzell said.

Later in the week, Bazzell said he should have a more clear picture of just what the bill will mean.

And for the third year in a row, the Pike County Board adopted a resolution in opposition of a proposed universal start date for Alabama.

“We believe decisions on calendars are best made up for local school systems,” Bazzell said.

Also in its meeting, the Pike County Board of Education:

-recognized Pike County Elementary School and Pike County High School for receiving stae AYP awards.

-approved a resolution recognizing February as Career Technical Education Month.

-approved to implement a new policy manual Wednesday.

-declared a Rockwell 3-phase drill press from the Troy Pike Career Technology Center as surplus.

-approved several travel requests for the JROTC program.

-approved a request for Goshen Elementary School fifth grade students to attend the Coosa River Science School in Columbiana.

-hired Eddie Stevenson as the new head football coach at Pike County High School.

-went into executive session to discuss discipline of a certified employee and termination of a support employee.
