The American Spiritual Ensemble, is composed of some of the finest singers in the United States, said Kristi Drinkwater, TAC president.
“The American Spiritual Ensemble is widely known and has receive accolades everywhere it has performed,” she said. “The ensemble was a featured presentation at the Southern Arts Federation, which promotes the touring of regional, national and international performing artists and writers. So, by that alone, we know they are outstanding.”
The American Spiritual Ensemble is especially known and recognized for its Negro spirituals but does other pieces as well. The spirituals are of special interest to church choirs and groups, Drinkwater said.
The ensemble was founded in 1995 by Dr. Everett McCorvey, who is originally from Montgomery. The ensemble has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, New Your City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Boston Opera and the Atlanta Civic Opera. The ensemble has traveled around the world to places including England, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain.
The American Spiritual Ensemble is supported by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and Troy University.
