Mary Hightower

Graveside services for Miss Mary Grace Hightower, age 90 of Bainbridge, will be held at 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at the Brundidge City Cemetery in Brundidge with the Rev. Bobby Hood officiating.
Visitation will be immediately following the service.
Miss Hightower was born in Brundidge, the daughter of the late Marshall and Effie Haisten Hightower. She moved from Brundidge to Decatur County in 1929 and graduated from Bainbridge High School. She graduated from Georgia College in Milledgeville and from Vanderbilt with a master’s degree. She taught school at West Bainbridge and moved to Atlanta in 1943 to become a State Librarian fro the Georgia School System and retired in 1976 as Head Librarian. Ms. Hightower was an avid baseball fan and volunteer with the Atlanta Braves. She helped organize the Berry College Library as well as the Kingsbridge Retirement Home and Columbia Road Baptist Church libraries. She sponsored Vietnamese families, helping them to relocate in the United States. She was a world traveler.
She is survived by two nieces Janet Bell of Bainbridge and Mary C. Hunter of Tallahassee, Fla.; three great-nieces, three great-nephews, four great-great-nieces and three great-great-nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister Myra Edith Armstrong and two brothers, James and Charles Hightower.
