The Edgewood Academy Wildcats won their first ever state championship Friday afternoon in Movie Gallery Stadium with a come-from-behind 19-12 victory over Lowndes Academy.
“We have been here three times in the last six years and I guess the third time is a charm,” Edgewood head coach Bobby Carr said. “I am awfully proud of our seniors. They showed a lot of leadership.”
In a game that barely had 400 yards of total offense, the Wildcats scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to best the Rebels.
Edgewood’s Tanner Drennan scored the final two touchdowns of the game for the Wildcats (12-0) and finished the game with 52 yards rushing on five carries. Cody Lee led all rushers with 75 yards on 23 carries.
Tyler Bozeman and Brandon Pate each had 56 yards rushing for the 10-3 Rebels.
Chris Tice led the way passing for Edgewood, going 7-of-12 for 113 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Cody Lee caught the touchdown pass from Tice. Dusty Owen, Chance Ward and Scott Davis each had an interception for Lowndes.
