Road work slows traffic on U.S 231

Additional repairs to U.S. 231 are likely to snarl traffic for the next several days or so, officials said Thursday.
Even though the holiday season is just a week away, Alabama Department of Transportation Project Manager Sam Lewis said some needed repairs had to be done to the road before weather got any colder.
“There’s some additional work we’re doing to improve the design at these intersections,” Lewis said, referring to the stretch of U.S. 231 North between the Wal-Mart Supercenter area and the Holiday Inn of Troy.
These repairs come just a few months after the department finished a massive resurfacing of the busy highway. Now, the department is making improvements to satisfy a contract, Lewis said.
Traffic will be stalled through the next few days, but Lewis said it should be a lot smoother than it was in the summer.
Lewis said the only time connecting roads would be blocked off is when repair trucks are working through intersections, but those times would be brief.
Troy Police Spokesman Sgt. Benny Scarbrough said officers will work with ALDOT to ensure traffic safety during the project.
“We’re out there assisting with traffic control, and that’s our main objective,” Scarbrough said. “We’ll make sure it’s safe and not congested, and at the same time, work with contractors and the state highway department to ensure this gets completed in the timeframe.”
