Hard-fought battle for Troy 9-and-unders

The Troy 9U boys’ soccer tournament team had a good showing at the Alabama Recreation & Parks Association tournament in Andalusia Saturday, but the Trojans came up just short of a title.

However, head coach Daniel Earles could not be any happier for his team.

“They played real well and Ozark had some very skilled players who were able to get past our defense,” Earles said. “We had some mental miscues on our part, but they played solid for the amount of time they had to prepare for the tournament. We took players off four separate teams and meshed them together in five days. Everyone knew their role out there today, but Ozark was just a very good team.”

The Troy 9U all-stars dropped the championship game to Ozark, 5-1, but Troy put up two shutouts to get to the championship game.

They blanked Andalusia 4-0 and Fort Rucker 5-0 earlier in the day.

Dawson Hamlin had the only goal for Troy in the championship and scored two goals in each of the other two games.

Toler Richburg also had two goals against Andalusia and Fort Rucker. D.J. Brooks had one goal against Fort Rucker.

Earles said the Trojans still could make the state tournament if they are invited.

The winners of each district tournament receive an automatic bid and the rest of the field is filled through an invitation process.
