At a time when the nation is engulfed in a political frenzy, the Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society will step back and take a look as other times of significant political “interest.”
The historical organization will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Colley Senior Complex on Elm Street in Troy. The public is invited to attend.
Steve Flowers, Alabama’s leading political columnist, will be the guest speaker for the meeting. He will speak on the events in Alabama politics in 1958 and other political events that had significant ramifications for the people of Alabama, said John Hutcheson, Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society president.
“Steve Flowers covers the state political scene each week in an entertaining and informative way,” Hutcheson said. “His column ‘Inside the Statehouse’ is published weekly in 72 Alabama newspapers with a total circulation of more than 390,000. He served 16 years in the Alabama State Legislature and brings a unique perspective to Alabama politics.”
Although, Flowers will be talking about Alabama politics, Hutcheson said he would not be surprised if Flowers has a few comments on the upcoming presidential election.
“Steve is a very interesting speaker and we are looking forward to hearing what he has to say,” Hutcheson said. “With the meeting being a little more than a week from Election Day, we expect to have several local candidates in attendance. We’ll be glad to have them and I’ll introduce them but they won’t be on the program to speak.”
The Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society meets three times a year. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
Annual membership fees are $17.50 and include two bulletins. Information about the Pike County Historical and Genealogical Society will be available at the meeting.
