Just how many students of Sessions School are still around, no one seems to know.

But those who attended the old school on Needmore Road have a soft spot in their hearts for the now lonely halls of learning.

“There are still a lot of us around,” said Gail Jordan, who attended Sessions School “And, several of us had been thinking that it would be a good idea for us to have a Sessions School reunion.”

The more the former students thought about the reunion the more determined they became.

So, a Sessions School reunion has been planned for Saturday, Nov. 1, at Sessions School.

“We are attempting to locate as many former students as we can,” Jordan said. “The only registers that we have are from 1940 through 1958 and that’s not nearly all the people who went there. We want to get the word out about the Sessions School reunion so everyone who went to school there will know that they are invited.”

The reunion will begin at 10 a.m. on Nov. 1, at nearby Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church.

“We’ll probably have the welcome at the church and then move over to the school,” Jordan said. “The church would be a quieter setting for us to sit down and talk about old times so we might go over there to share our stories.

“There are students of Sessions School that are in their 80s and 90s and they have memories of the school that those of us who attended in later years don’t have.”

Jordan attended Sessions School through the sixth grade. After students finished the sixth grade a bus took them to school in Troy.

She graduated from Troy High School in 1961 and her memories of Sessions School would be foreign to today’s high school graduates.

“Sessions School had an outhouse and was heated with a potbellied stove,” Jordan said. “The only light that we had was a bulb on a drop cord and we didn’t turn it on unless it got real dark. It will be a lot of fun to sit around and share our memories.”

Those attending the reunion are asked to bring old photographs and any memorabilia from the school.

“Lunch will be provided at the school for a donation or, if you’d rather bring a dessert, that will be fine, too,” Jordan said. “It would be very helpful in preparing the lunch if we had an idea of the number that will be coming.”

Although a response is appreciated it is not necessary.

“We just want all students of the old Sessions School to join us for this very special reunion,” Jordan said.
