The Goshen Lady Eagles found their way into the playoffs Monday night in Zion Chapel. The Lady Eagles took down Highland Home in the first round of the AHSAA Class 2A, Area 5 tournament 3-1 (25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19).

The win propelled the Lady Eagles (5-11) into regional action in Ohatchee Saturday.

“We are excited and ready to continue playing,” GHS head coach Dee Hughes said. “We have been working hard in practice and we are glad to have Caneshia Whatley back.”

Whatley came off the injured list and had 12 kills in 14 attempts, but Diamond Cottrell led the Lady Eagles in the win with 16 kills.

But the high from beating Highland Home did not last long, as host Zion Chapel dropped the Lady Eagles 3-0 (10-25, 13-25, 4-25) in the championship round.

“The hardest thing was transitioning from the two-hit attack of Highland Home to the three-hit attack from Zion Chapel,” Hughes said. “There was just a difference in the level of the competition that we couldn’t get over.”

Kelli Behrens again led the Lady Rebels of Zion Chapel with 20 service points, two blocks and one dig. She added three kills and two aces. Nicole Holloway led the team with three aces and Cheyenne Nelson led with four kills.

Goshen travels to Ohatchee to take on the 26-7 Lady Indians Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. The Lady Rebels will take on Shades Mountain in Ohatchee at 11:15 a.m.
