Simon Byrd Jr.

Simon Byrd Jr. was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Simon Byrd Sr. of Troy. He was born on Aug. 18, 1918.

He united with the First Missionary Baptist Church early in life. He received his education in the Troy City Schools. He worked for many years with Rosenbergs Bros. of Troy. Later in life he worked for Spurlock. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and family.

On July 26, 2007, the Lord gently closed his eyes and he quietly went to sleep.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at First Missionary Baptist Church in Troy.

He is survived by a loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Iola Powell Byrd; one daughter, Rosa Virginia McMillian (Tommy) of Troy; a son, William Wright (Belinda) of Troy; a devoted niece, Blonzell Holt Byrd of Troy; nephews, Rudolph Byrd (Pamela) of Troy, James Byrd of Atlanta, Ga.; and a special nephew, Alphonsa Byrd Jr. of Montgomery; Nieces, Patricia Thomas (Willie) of Troy, Melanie Williams (Arlesta) of Tuscaloosa, Doris Cuellar of Cleveland, Ohio, Donna Drakeford of Phoenix City, Valarie Byrd of Troy, Ashley Byrd of Montgomery; a Brother-in-law, Jake Lawrence (Beatrice) of Birmingham; sisters-in-law, Melvere Warren and Martha Byrd of Troy, Beaulah Patterson (Buddy) and Inez Daniels of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a cousin, Mozelle Moubley of Detroit, Mich.; uncle, George Byrd of Las Vegas, Nev.; extended family, Virginia Spurlock and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Spurlock Jr. of Troy; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Active Pallbearers will be Major Lane, George Larry, Charles Potts, Morace Harris, Willie James Scott and Jimmy Woods.

Flower Bearers will be friends and family.

Dinner will be served at FMBC Fellow Ship Hall following the interment.

Nell Tatom West

Nell Tatom West, 82, widow of the late Fred West Jr., went to live with the Lord Thursday, July 26, 2007. She was a resident of Abbeville, S.C., before entering the NHC Nursing Home in Greenwood, S.C., in December 2002.

Born in Troy, Ala., on Feb. 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Roy Lamar Tatom and Johnnie Camp Tatom.

She was employed with the Press and Banner Newspaper in different capacities before retiring in the late 80s. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Abbeville. An avid bridge player, she shared her skills with many young adults in and around Abbeville.

Mrs. West is survived by four children, a daughter, Mary Nell West of Ninety Six, S.C.; and three sons, Fred D. West III and wife Melinda of Simpsonville, S.C., Lamar T. West and John R. West and wife Lynne of Abbeville, S.C.; also one sister, Jacquelyn Wyatt of Abbeville, S.C., and one brother, Roy Lamar Tatom and wife Margie Tatom of Brundidge, Ala. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Shannon West of Jacksonville, Fla., Ed Greene, Steven Greene and Justin Tilley of Greenville, S.C., and Zach West, Cady Nell West, Chris West and Tatom West of Abbeville.

The service was at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2007 at

First Baptist Church in Abbeville, S.C. The family received friends before the service from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the church.

Joan Carol Jordan Spivey

Joan Carol Jordan Spivey, 67, of Troy, went home to be with her Lord Monday, July 30, 2007.

Visitation will be held at Dillard Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

There will be a one-hour lie-in-state prior to the service at the church.

The funeral service will be held at Good Hope Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne Locklar and the Rev. W.O. Sanders officiating.

Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Mrs. Spivey is survived by her children, Tim (Reba) Spivey of Goshen, Tommy (Kathy) Spivey of Troy, Jondy (Elvira) Spivey of Troy, Julie Chesnutt of Pike County, Gina (James) Andrews Sr. of Troy and Gere (Melissa) Spivey of Troy; sister, Jean Jordan Driver of Deatsville; grandchildren, Courtney and Trip Roddy III, Ashley and Drew Tranum, Gwendolyn Spivey, David Spivey, Katy Spivey, Faith Spivey, Natalia Spivey, Matthew Webb, Jesse Chesnutt, Robert Chesnutt, Wendy and Chris Adamson, James and Denise Andrews Jr., Jessica and Travis Jones, Adam Linzey, Taylor Spivey and Tripp Spivey; nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives.
