Doris Barefoot Mathews
Services for Doris Barefoot Mathews, 80, who died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at Troy Health and Rehabilitation Center, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Banks Baptist Church with the Rev. W.O. Sanders officiating.
Burial followed at Banks Cemetery.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the church.
A longtime resident of Banks, Mrs. Mathews was born in Tennille on Oct. 16, 1926. She was the daughter of Dewey H. and Eula (Stewart) Barefoot. After graduating from Pike County High School in Brundidge in 1945, she attended and graduated from Massey-Draughn Business College in Montgomery. She subsequently was employed by Troy Bank and Trust Co. and later by the U.S. Postal Service in the Banks Post Office, having served in every position in that office.
She was an active member of Banks Baptist Church all of her adult life and was a devoted wife and loving mother. She enjoyed gardening as well as hunting and fishing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 59 years, James F. &uot;Frank&uot; Mathews; her parents, a great-grandson, William Patrick Woodham; and a brother, Bobby Jack Barefoot.
Mrs. Mathews is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and John P. Johnston of Brundidge; two granddaughters, Rebecca (Marc) Woodham of Brundidge and Rachel (Henry) Everett of Troy; two great-grandsons, Thomas J. Woodham and Malachi R. Everett; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Barefoot of Prattville and Hannah Bates of Montgomery; and a niece and five nephews.
The family expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the management and staff at Troy Health and Rehab for the kindnesses shown to Mrs. Mathews during her stay there.
