Country singer Tracy Byrd's "Watermelon Crawl" song could very well be appropriate for the Watermelon Festival, where people could "Drink, don't drive, and do the watermelon crawl."

The seeds were flying and the fun was evident at the Pioneer Village on Saturday. The Watermelon Festival had folks from all over the state coming out and enjoying hayrides, seed-spitting contests and good American fun. Pioneer Village owner Ralph Johnson said he thought the day went well.

"We are just out here having a good time and enjoying this time of year," he said. "The biggest success has been the spittin' contest. These kids just bow up and let them fly."

In the watermelon seed spitting contest first place went to Timothy Hawkins. His seed flew the farthest at 13 feet, 0 inches. Second place went to Kellie Shumway. She spit her seed 9 feet, 5 inches. Third place went to Jacey Rayborn for 8 feet, 9 inches.

"I knew I could spit the farthest," Hawkins said. "I just rare back and spit it."

Hawks won the prize, but all of the contestants looked like they had fun.

It was on to the hayride after the contest. Moms, dads, and grandmas and grandpas all climbed up in the wagon and took about a half-mile trip around the Pioneer Village.

"We don't go far but it's still a lot of fun to the kids," Johnson said. "We just take a trip around the village and show them all the shops."

Johnson said the Village would also be opened today from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and he invites everyone to come out for some good watermelon and good company.
