Softball tourney excites host families

The Troy Sportsplex is home to the Dixie Belles and Angels softball state tournament this weekend and the only people more excited than the folks at Troy Parks and Recreation are the parents of the competing teams.

"They see the state tournament as being something like Disneyworld," director Dan Smith told a group of host families Monday morning. "We don't want to disappoint them."

The host families will play a major part in this weekend's activities and serve as a point of contact between the visiting teams and the recreation department.

Smith said the host families' main priority will be making the teams feel at home in Troy.

"We want them to feel connected," he said. "We want the teams and families to feel welcome in Troy and that we appreciate them coming."

Being a host does not mean turning your living room into a hotel lobby.

Host families are asked to meet their assigned team at hotel check-in on Friday, attend the cookout at Troy Elementary School and the tournament opening ceremonies with them that night and watch the team's game on Saturday.
