Laura Wesley, a senior at Charles Henderson High School, has been selected the recipient of the Sam S. Williams Soil and Water Conservation Foundation sponsored scholarship award of $800.
Randy Hale, district conservationist, presented the award to Laura.
"Laura is a very worthy recipient of this award," Hale said. "She has demonstrated an interest in working with environmental issues and we are proud to award the Sam S. Williams Soil and Water Conservation Foundation Scholarship to her.
Laura expressed appreciation to Hale and the foundation for the confidence shown in her by awarding her the scholarship.
"My education or career objective is to become an environmental scientist or a geological or environmental engineer," Laura said. "This wide filed of study covers my interest in soils, rocks, natural resources and the environment."
Laura said agri-science courses she has taken in high school have promoted further interest in the field, as well as her father's responsible work with ground and wastewater in Brundidge.
"He takes care of the water system there and he has encouraged me to explore the possibility of a career combing geology and the environment," she said.
Laura is intrigued by complex puzzles and she views her career choices as "complex puzzles."
"Managing natural resources to meet mankind's increasing need, while preserving and restoring natural resources will always be a changing and challenging puzzle to solve," Laura said. "I look forward to those challenges."
