Classmates of a Charles Henderson High School senior are remembering her at graduation.

Dorothy Bennett, 18, won't be attending graduation ceremonies because she was one of two Troy teenagers injuried in a collision on County Road 63 May 12.

Betty Wagner, who is in charge of senior activities at CHHS, said Bennett is undergoing treatment for her injuries at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

"It is my understanding that she was taken to the emergency room (at Edge Regional Medical Center) and put into ICU," she said.

"Then she was air lifted to UAB.

I understand she is doing much better."

Bennett was driving a 1993 Ford and Jill Bunk, 19, was driving a 1999 Nissan when they collided head on just four miles south of Troy.

Dorris Teague, a spokesperson in Montgomery for the Alabama State Troopers, said the accident was still under investigation.

Wagner said Bennett's classmates are hopeful for a complete recovery.

"They are optimistic," she said.

"Dorothy is a very fine girl.

She is quiet, reserved and well-liked by her peers."

Because Bennett will not be able to take part in senior award ceremonies and graduation, Wagner said a yellow rose will be put in her place at each event.

Wagner said CHHS Principal Linda Felton had visited Bennett in Birmingham, but neither Felton nor Bennett's parents could be reached for comment.

Bunk was also injured during the accident but state troopers had received no word on her condition.
