Dixie Youth teams sweep opening day of sub-districts

EUFAULA – he Troy Dixie Youth Nationals defeated Newton 6-5 Friday in the first round of the sub-district tournament, and played Saturday night at 8 p.m. in the second round. Troy was to play the winner of Friday’s Eufaula Americans vs. Abbeville contest.
Troy starting pitcher David Williams was dominant over five innings, allowing one run on one hit, before Newton’s Antonio Curley hit a grand-slam home run in the top of the sixth inning to cut Troy’s lead to 6-5. Casey Weston then came on to notch the final out and seal the win for Troy.
Newton jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Robbie Clark walked and later scored on an infield ground ball.
Troy went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as William Teal walked, and scored on a line-drive double by Weston. Williams then followed with a drive off the right-field fence, missing a homer by two feet.
Adam Senn started a four-run rally for Troy in the bottom of the fifth inning as he drew a walk, followed by a walk by Zeb Swindall. Dario Rouse then reached on a fielder’s choice. Jake Smith and Trent Boutwell then walked, pushing Swindall across for the 3-1 lead. Wesley Hayes was hit by a pitch to drive in another run, and with two outs, Ryan Williams stroked a single to score Smith and Boutwell, for the 6-1 lead.
The long at-bat possibly gave Williams too much rest, as he walked Thomas Morton with one out, and then hit Michale Buckman. Williams settled down to strike out Bradley Hughes for the second out, but walked Nick Burgan to load the bases. Newton’s Curley then hit a line drive that barely cleared the left field fence, for the grand slam, and cut Troy’s lead to 6-5. Weston then came in to force Justin Bass to hit into a ground-out to end the game.
Troy collected five hits on the day, as Teal, Williamson, Weston, Williams and Jeremey McGuire each had hits.
Williams ended the evening with six innings work, allowing two hits, five runs, walking seven and striking out six.
Troy Americans down Georgiana 5-2: In sub-district play on Friday night, the Troy Americans beat Georgiana 5-2 as Aaron Allen, Darrell Reynolds and Jonathan Wade all combined to pick up the win for Troy.
Allen started on the mound for Troy, striking our four batters and giving up no hits. Reynolds came in as relief and struck out all six batters he faced before giving way to Wade in the fifth and sixth innings of play. Wade allowed one hit with two runs coming home for Georgiana. He also struck out three of the six batters he faced.
Troy opened with a solo home run by Rickey Goodwin in the first inning and Alex Adams scored in the third on error. The Americans punched in three runs in the fourth to take the 5-0 lead as Goodwin scored, Clifton Brady reached on a basehit and scored, and Ryan Skeen reached on error and came home as well.
Georgiana scored their runs on a three-base error by Troy and a homerun.
Troy received a bye with the win and will play next on Monday night.
