Trojans take one of two from Stetson

Stetson and Troy State wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Melching Field.  The Hatters (40-15, 19-9 A-Sun) took the first game 8-5, collecting their 40th win of the season.  The Trojans (28-28, 16-14 A-Sun) came back to win game two 6-4.

The teams will meet again 7 p.m. Wednesday night in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, hosted by Stetson.

In game one, Stetson used a 12-hit attack and overcame four errors to post a three-run victory.  Andy Wilson was 3-for-3 with an RBI double, and Chris Westervelt hit his team-leading 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth to break a 4-4 tie.

The Hatters added one more run in the fifth and two in the sixth, and Wilson struck out three of the four batters he faced to earn his 12th save of the year.

Jack Collins (5-2) allowed one earned run in three innings of relief to help Stetson pick up its 40th win of the season.  It is the third straight year and the sixth time in school history the Hatters have reached the 40-win plataeu.

Coby Smith and Drew Miller each recorded a pair of hits to lead the Trojans.  Marcus Bell (3-7) suffered the loss in relief.

In game two, Miller doubled, homered, and drove in two runs and Smith scored three times as Troy State gained a split in the doubleheader.  

Trailing 6-0, Stetson rallied for a run in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull within two runs.  But Justin Morgan got the final two outs with the tying runs on base as the Trojans salvaged the final game of the three game series.

Justin Eason (7-6) allowed six hits and one run over five-plus innings to pick up the victory.  Adam Blair (4-3) suffered the loss.

Westervelt had five hits in the doubleheader, including three doubles and a home run.
