Lady Trojans sweep A-Sun doubleheader against Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ­ The Troy State softball team opened its Atlantic Sun Conference schedule in style with a sweep at Samford on Tuesday night at Bulldog Field.
"Our offense came up with some really big hits for us tonight," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis.
"We played solid defense and got out early and allowed our pitchers to relax while they were in the circle.
This was a great start to the conference season and gives us some momentum as we go to Florida this weekend."
The Lady Trojans (32-10, 2-0 A-Sun) opened the doubleheader with a 3-2 win.
The Troy State offense pounded out 14 hits, but left seven on base.
All nine starters had at least one hit, with Erin Flater leading the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a single to left field that drove home Jenny Boyd in the seventh to put Troy State on top.
Kim Unkneholz picked up the win, scattering four hits over seven innings while giving up two runs with one earned.
She struck out seven and walked one while improving to 7-2 on the season.
Samford’s (13-19, 0-4 A-Sun) Erin Landsburg picked up the loss, dropping her record to 7-12.
Troy State jumped out with four runs in the second on its way to 5-0 win.
Bonnie Belin sparked the rally in the second, lining a two-run home run to right center to give TSU a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Ashley Floyd picked up the win, allowing two hits over five innings to raise her record to 9-2 on the year.
She struck out five and walked two.
Boyd went 3-for-4 in the second game, scoring one run.
Molly Homer went 1-for-2 with her second home run of the year.
Amber Fuller got the loss for Samford, falling to 6-7 on the year.
She allowed four runs on four hits in one and two-thirds innings, walking one and hitting three.
The Lady Trojans return to action on Friday as they travel to Orlando to face off against UCF in another A-Sun doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (EST).
