Off to the second best start in school history, the Troy State softball team was ranked in the top 10 in South Region in the first edition of the regional rankings as released by the NCAA.

The South Region is comprised of teams in the Atlantic Coast, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Atlantic Sun and Southern conferences. Each conference has a representative on the rankings committee.

The Lady Trojans (30-10) have won 10 of their last 12, including a win over No. 20 Florida State, to join three other A-Sun teams in the rankings.

UCF, Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville State all were in the top 10.

"This is a great honor for our team," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis.

"This gives the team some well-deserved recognition after playing a difficult non-conference schedule. To get four teams into ranked in the first poll is truly amazing. It shows how competitive the conference is going to be this season."

Rounding out the teams ranked in the South Region are Bethune-Cookman, Chattanooga, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia.

The first two rankings, released bi-weekly, list the top 10 teams in each region in alphabetical order.

The final three rankings will actually rank each team.

Troy State opens up its A-Sun schedule with a doubleheader at Samford on Tuesday.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
