The Troy State softball team battled through a rainy afternoon to split a doubleheader with Elon at the Lady Trojan Softball Complex on Tuesday.
The Lady Trojans (30-10) captured game one 10-0 in five innings. Troy State pounded out 14 hits, led by Molly Homer, who went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Erin Flater helped the cause, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Kim Unkenholz picked up the win, allowing just two hits over five innings while striking out three to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Elon (8-20) bounced back to take the second game, 5-3. The Lady Trojans committed four errors, which the Phoenix turned into three unearned runs. Troy State managed just seven hits, led by Peggy Swift’s 2-for-3 effort. Cassie Wilkenson suffered her second straight loss, dropping her record to 12-3. She allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.
"We played very solid in the first game, but made some mental mistakes in the second game," Troy State head coach Melanie Davis said. "You can’t make four errors and expect to win ball games. We’ve got three practices left before we open up conference play a week from today and we’re going to have work really hard if we want to reach the goals that we have set for this season."
After a morning practice on Wednesday, the Lady Trojans will take the rest of the week off for spring break and will be back in action on April 2, as they open Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road at Samford. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
