GOSHEN – Goshen junior pitcher Wesley Wright certainly had his 90-plus mile per hour fastball working on Friday.

Wright pitched a no-hitter against rival Pike County and struck out 16 Bulldog batters as the Eagles avenged an earlier 11-10 loss with a 5-0 victory.

Wright only issued two walks during the game with both coming in the fourth inning. The junior hit Pike County lead-off batter Chris Bell in the first inning, but then proceeded to sit down the next nine batters he faced at the plate.

"Wesley was definitely on today," said Goshen head coach Chad Dube. "The thing is, when he throws the ball as fast as he does, there’s really no need for him to use a change-up. He just started throwing a curve ball last season."

Errors and a lack of hitting early cost the Eagles last time out against the Bulldogs in Brundidge, but with Wright on the mound five hits and five runs was enough for Goshen to earn its second win of the season.

Goshen is currently 2-2 on the season.

"We could very easily be 4-0," said Dube, who has had to rely on the pitching of two freshmen, Brandon Hughes and Brandon Walters, to back up Wright. "Brandon (Walters) pitched

a good enough game for us the last time against Pike County to win."

Walters and sophomore Matt Qualls led Goshen at the plate against Pike County. Walters and Qualls went 2-for-3, with Qualls driving in three runs on his two hits.

Goshen plays Georgiana at home on March 22, while Pike County travels to Ariton on Monday.
