Lady Trojans rained out on second day of tournament

ATLANTA, Ga. ­ The Troy State softball team opened the 2002 Georgia State Invitational with an 8-0 win in six innings over the College of Charleston at Bob Heck Field, running its winning streak to nine games on Friday afternoon.

However, the Lady Trojans were supposed to face No. 21 Georgia and Birmingham Southern on Saturday, also in the tournament, but the games were ranied out. They will not be made up.

Erin Flater led the Lady Trojans (15-4) on Friday, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a triple.

Erica Cruzat went 2-for-3, with a RBI double and a run scored.

Kim Unkenholz picked up her first win of the season to even her record at 1-1.

Unkenholz pitched four scoreless innings, while allowing one hit and striking out three.

Ashley Floyd came on in relief, shutting out the Cougars over the last two innings.

"Our offense stepped up and took control early today," said Troy State head coach Melanie Davis.

"Kim and Ashley both pitched well for us today and everybody contributed to this win.

We’ve been hitting the ball well lately with Erin and Erica coming through with some big hits for us today."

Troy State will wrap up the tournament on Sunday, facing UT-Martin at 10 a.m. and No. 17 DePaul at 12:30 p.m. at Bob Heck Field.
