TSU wins overtime thriller

Thea Herring led the Lady Trojans with 22 points and five rebounds, as Troy State defeated Jacksonville State in overtime, 70-67 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Herring scored the first eight points for Troy State (7-12, 6-6 A-Sun) as they jumped out to an early 8-2 lead with 16:30 to go in the first half. Herring finished the first half with 14 points as the Lady Trojans went in with a three point lead 32-29.

Jacksonville State (4-16, 3-10 A-Sun) came out in the second half on a hot streak outscoring Troy State 24-12 to go up by nine, 53-44, with 8:06 to play. Lady Gamecock forward Ann-Marie Healy led the way scoring nine of the team’s 24 points.

Down five points, with 2:25 to play, the Lady Trojans would’nt give up. A three-pointer by Chaquita Alexander and a jumper by Haley Konrad knotted the score at 63 with 1:22 to play. Both teams had good looks at the basket but failed to convert and the game headed to overtime.

In the extra period, Alexander scored five of Troy State’s seven points as the Lady Trojans held on for the 70-67 victory.

"I was proud the way our girls hung in there towards the end of regulation," head coach Jerry Hester said. "To be down by five with two minutes to play and still pull out the victory showed that our girls have a lot of heart."

For the game Troy State shot 40 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the charity stripe. Jacksonville State shot 27 percent from the floor and 72 percent from the line. Troy State was also outrebounded 62-40.

The Lady Trojans will be back in action as they travel to take on Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
