Lady Trojans drop heartbreaker to Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Troy State women’s basketball team lost on the road at Mercer Wednesday night, 64-59 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
Mercer’s Jo Shaw hit a three-pointer with seven seconds left to put the Lady Bears up 62-59. On the ensuing possession, Troy State’s Rebekah Waters couldn’t handle a pass from Kerri Fiehrer as the Lady Trojans (5-12, 4-6 A-Sun) turned the ball over with three seconds left. Mercer sank two more free throws to finish off the game.
In the first half, the Lady Bears (9-8, 6-4 A-Sun) jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game. Mercer’s Mia Washington scored five of the first six Lady Bear points with two buckets and a free throw. Troy State answered scoring six straight points with two free throws from sophomore center Thea Herring and baskets by Laura Schwendeman and Haley Konrad.
Waters came out hot as she poured in eight first-half points on 3-of-3 shooting from the floor with a three-pointer. She also added a free throw, but the Lady Trojans went in at the half down 28-26. Waters finished the game with 11 points.
Down the stretch in the second half Herring scored 18 points. She finished the game with a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds.
Troy State finished the game shooting 31 percent from the floor and 58 percent from the free-throw line. Mercer finished with 29 percent shooting from the floor and 74 percent from the charity stripe. Mercer outshot the Lady Trojans from the line, making 17 more free throws than Troy State, 28-11.
Troy State will begin a two-game homestand when play host to Samford at Trojan Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
