Patriots, Lady Patriots knock off ranked Wilcox teams

Pike Liberal Arts School proved to be double trouble for Wilcox Academy on Friday night at the Wilcox Academy Christmas Tournament.

The Lady Patriots pulled off a 35-29 upset of the No. 4 Lady Wildcats, 35-29, while the PLAS boy’s team came from 12-0 deficit to hand the third- ranked Wilcox Academy varsity squad a 57-51 setback.

Layton Sanders paced the Patriots’ effort, scoring 16 points in the game. Forward Druid Conrad added 14 points also as PLAS evened its record to 4-4 on the year, heading into championship game on Saturday night against Patrician Academy.

Wilcox’s Guy Gusmus had 20 points to lead all scorers.

In the girl’s game, Beth Anderson had 13 points and Danielle Johnson scored 10 as the Lady Patriots improved to 5-3 on the season.

Wilcox Academy was the second top ten team to fall to the Lady Patriots this year, with the other being Fort Dale.

PLAS moved on to face No. 6 Patrician in the title game on Saturday.

Jessica Collins led Wilcox with 12 points and Anne Jones had 10 rebounds.
