Neighbors help neighbors at Christmas

Neighbors helping neighbors.

It’s the simple concept behind efforts like the Pike County Christmas program, which provides gifts and toys for scores of needy children in our county each year. The program is supported through community donations gifts of $5, $10, $15 or more that, when added together, make Christmas considerably brighter for the foster children, needy children and residents of group homes who benefit from the effort.

In fact, organizers have a $25-per-child goal for the program. "It’s surprising what you can buy for a child for $25," said Mashone Fleming, chairman of the program.

In order for the program to work, we must support it. And that means sharing donations large or small to help improve the quality of life for our neighbors. Americans are a traditionally generous people we share what we have with those who are less fortunate. And, here in Pike County, we’re no different. We share our hearts and our hopes, our fears and our triumphs, and we share a desire for a happy, joyous holiday season.

And, in this season, we know that it truly is better to give than to receive.

We encourage you to support the Pike County Christmas Fund by making a contribution or volunteering to help with the gift distribution on Dec. 21. You may send donations to P.O. Box 1276, Troy, AL, 36081, or call 808-2036 for more information.
