In this, the eighth week of high school football, just three teams named No. 1 in their respective classifications by the Alabama Sports Writers Association during the preseason, remain on top.

Hoover (6A), Homewood (5A), and T.R. Miller (4A), defending state champs from a year ago, are all still unbeaten and No. 1, according to the ASWA high school football poll released on Tuesday by the Birmingham News.

Aliceville started off the year at No. 1 in 3A, but that position is now occupied by Phil Campbell (6-0). Aliceville is No. 5 with one loss. Washington County and Lanett remain at No. 8 and No. 10, respectively. The Pike County Bulldogs received just two votes in this week’s poll, to come in at 14th, despite manhandling Class 1A No. 9 Courtland last Friday night in Brundidge, 41-0. The loss was the second straight for the Chiefs, who fell six places after being ranked No. 3 last week.

Maplesville’s loss to Autaugaville paved the way for G.W. Long to claim the No. 1 spot in this week’s Class 1A poll.

Leroy still holds a stranglehold on No.1 in Class 2A. Straughn is No. 8, while Highland Home is No. 9.

No. 2 Wilcox-Central made a slight gain on No. 1 Homewood in Class 5A, with 191 total votes to Homewood’s 250. Homewood had 18 first place votes, while the Jaguars had just four. With all the top ten teams in 5A winning last week, Charles Henderson once again failed to crack into the poll, receiving five votes on Tuesday.

South Montgomery fell out of the AISA poll for the first time this season, following the loss last week to Crenshaw Christian. Glenwood is still No. 1, with Monroe maintaining their position at No. 2 after a close win over No. 6 Mobile Christian a week ago.
