VanHottegem leads Troy State past Lady Panthers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ­ Erika VanHootegem had a season-high 20 kills for a .567 hitting percentage, nine digs and two aces as the Troy State volleyball team defeated Birmingham-Southern, 3-0, at the Striplin Center Tuesday night.

TSU (5-6) won game one, 30-20, as it hit .429 and committed just four attack errors. The Trojans claimed game two, 30-25, and out-hit the Panthers, .324-.316. The third game went back-and-forth until the Trojans broke it open on the serve of setter Erika Leitzke. With the score tied at 19, the freshman from Hustisford, Wis., served up eight straight points as TSU rolled to a 30-21 win.

Sophomore Haven Triboulet recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and a match-high 11 digs. Sophomore Rachel Hassan had nine kills on .412 hitting, nine digs and two aces for the Trojans.

Miljana Lazarevic had 11 kills to lead BSC (4-10). Rachel Malmborg added nine kills and seven digs.

TSU will return to Atlantic Sun play this weekend as it travels to Orlando, Fla., to face defending conference champion UCF on Friday at the UCF Arena. Match time is 6 p.m. Central. The Trojans will wrap-up their current five-match road trip on Sunday at Stetson.
