Lady Trojans take out Aamp;M

NORMAL, Ala. ­ Behind Rachel Hassan’s .516 hitting percentage and Erika VanHootegem’s match-high 18 kills, the Troy State volleyball team knocked Alabama A&M from the ranks of the unbeaten with a convincing 3-1 win at Elmore Gymnasium.

Despite out-hitting the Lady Bulldogs, .273 to .233, the Trojans dropped the first game, 30-28. TSU responded with a 30-19 win in the second game behind Hassan’s five kills. The Trojans closed-out the match with identical 30-20 victories in the fourth and fifth games.

VanHootegem also had eight digs, two assists, an ace and a block, while Hassan finished with 16 kills. Erika Leitzke recorded her third double-double of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. Holly Martin recorded nine kills on .438 hitting and led the team with four service aces.

With the win, the Trojans snap a five-match losing streak and improve to 4-5. AAMU falls to 9-1 on the season.

TSU returns to action on Saturday, when it opens Atlantic Sun Conference play at Samford. First serve is set for 2 p.m. Central Time at Seibert Hall in Birmingham, Ala.
