Rumors are circulating surrounding the death of Troy State University freshman Brandy Hobson, 17, of Clio, but no additional information is available pending
a report from the state forensics lab, said Col. John Schmidt, vice president of student affairs at TSU.
Hobson was found unconscious in her dorm room at Clements Hall Sunday by her parents, according to Dave Barron, director of university relations at TSU.
Paramedics responded to the emergency call from the parents but were unable to revive the teen. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Jerry Williams.
Schmidt said the thoughts and prayers of the entire Troy State University family are with the family of Brandy Hobson.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," Schmidt said. "This is a terrible tragedy and everyone at the university is saddened by the death of Brandy Hobson. We feel remorse at what has happened. My heart went out to her parents in their sorrow Monday. This is a terrible shock for all of us."
Schmidt said he and other university officials are aware of the rumors surrounding the death of the TSU freshman.
"The investigation is still underway and we won’t know anything until the forensic folks come back with their findings," he said. "To say any more would be premature."
However, Schmidt did say that no shots were fired in connection with the student’s death.
"That shots were fired is just a rumor," he said. "That did not occur. And, that is really all I can say regarding the circumstances surrounding her death at this time."
Troy State has a hot line in place for parents of university students who have concerns. The number to call is 670-3203.
