Two Pike County athletes competed last week at the Alabama All-Start Sports Week held in Montgomery.
Goshen junior Averick Rogers was a participant in the boys North-South All-Star basketball game on Thursday night. The South edged the North 85-83. Rogers, a 6-foot-2 guard, finished with four points, added two steals and grabbed two rebounds.
Down 14-9 in at the start of the second quarter, Rogers helped contribute to a South 7-0 run when he stole the ball and pulled up for a 3-pointer. Jeff Buskey gave the South a 15-14 lead minutes later with a 3-point shot of his own.
Rogers hit 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds left in the game to seal the win for the South.
Rogers, who will be a senior in the fall, also plays baseball and football for the Eagles.
Kelly Miller, who graduated from Charles Henderson High School in the spring, played on the South All-Stars Fastpitch Softball team in Wednesday action against the North All-Stars.
The North swept both games, winning the first 5-2 and shutting out the South 5-0 in the second.
Miller had four at-bats during both games, but was unable to get a hit. She did, however, contribute a great deal to the South’s defensive effort. Miller totalled 10 put outs playing first base for the South in the first game, and at her more natural position of shortstop in the second game, she had five put outs along with two assists.
Miller also played shooting guard for the Charles Henderson girls basketball team as well as volleyball.
