Troy State’s Green named 2001 Athlete of the Year

Macon, Ga. – Campbell University’s Sara Moore (basketball) and Troy State University’s Michael Green (Cross Country/Track & Field) have been selected as Atlantic Sun Student-Athletes-of-the-Year for 2001. The voting was done by the Atlantic Sun Faculty Athletic Representatives and is based on academic, athletic, and campus leadership achievement.

Green (Lancashire, England), ran the distance for the Trojan cross country and track and field teams, picking up three consecutive Atlantic Sun Cross Country Runner-of-the-Year Awards as the top individual finisher in 1998, 1999, and 2000. An Academic All-Conference performer, Green was named U.S. Cross Country Association All-American and carries a 3.9 grade point average in Sports & Fitness Management. Green graduated with a bachelor’s degree in December 2000. He is currently pursuing his master’s in the same field.He advanced through NCAA Regionals to the National Cross Country Championship and placed 90th at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships this past fall. During the spring season Green posted eight first-place finishes in distance events for the Trojan track and field team. He set a new meet record in the New Orleans Invitational by running the 1500 meters in 3:53.47. He also set the TSU Invitational meet record in the 5000 meters with a time of 8:10.06. Green won the 2001 Atlantic Sun 5000 and 10000 meter titles to earn All-Conference honors, a distance double he also accomplished in 1998.
