First Sgt. (Retired) Benoit "Ben" Mailhot, 68 of Smiths, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at his residence.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. E.S.T. on Thursday, June 28 at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery in Ft. Mitchell. Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mailhot was born July 17, 1932 in Lyster, Canada, the son of the late Henry and Marie Bergeron Mailhot. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service with tours in both the Korean War and Vietnam War. After his highly decorated military career, he retired from civil service after 23 years with the engineers section at Ft. Benning Military Reservation.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Scarbrough Mailhot of Smiths; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Gary and Donna Mailhot of Midland, Ga. and Mike Mailhot of Ellerslie, Ga.; sister, Alliette Handrand of Naples, Fla.; brothers, Leo Mailhot of Newington, Conn. and Roger Mailhot of Bristol, Conn.; father-in-law, Luther Scarbrough of Troy; grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan, Zachary, Madison, Drake and Jenna; several nieces and nephews.
