Heavy rain showers this past weekend across south Alabama caused the cancellation of several scheduled baseball games in Troy.

The Troy Post 70 Junior Legion was supposed to play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Dale County and Slocomb at Charles Henderson’s Frazier Field.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Troy head coach Russ Jinright said the team’s intentions were to play the two games, but the rain continued to pour across Pike County on Saturday afternoon and left Frazier Field, already soaked from Friday night’s showers, a muddy mess.

But Jinright said he was able to reschedule one of the games on this weekend’s schedule, which was needed, especially after rain on Monday forced the cancellation of another originally scheduled contest at Houston Academy.

Troy Post 70 will play Dale County at Frazier Field on Wednesday night. Opening pitch will be thrown out at 6:30 p.m.

"I was glad we were able to reschedule at least one of those games," Jinright said. "But with the rain there was no way we were going to be able to play this weekend."

Post 70 will continue play this weekend when they host Auburn University-Montgomery on Friday night at 6 p.m. and Jinright said the Auburn Junior Legion team will join Post 70 and G.W. Long for a round-robin tournament on Saturday.

Troy will play G.W. Long at 11 a.m. to open the tournament.

Rain also caused the Troy Amateur Baseball League to delay its opening day. The TABL was supposed to start league play on Sunday afternoon, also at Frazier Field.

The Troy Post 70 Senior Legion team will return to action on Wednesday also. The Senior Legion will be in Dothan to take on last year’s American Legion State Champions, Dothan Post 12. The two seven inning contests will be played at Dothan’s

Northcutt Field.
