Trojans strike back

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Troy State baseball put out No. 2 seeded Stetson, 5-2, in the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament at Alexander Brest Field on Thursday.

Senior Jason Bernard (11-4), an All-TAAC pitcher from Panama City, Fla., held the Hatters to just two runs off of five hits while throwing his 10th complete game of the season.

Junior Drew Miller, a first basemen from Skipperville, Ala., led the Trojan offense with three hits in three at bats, including a game-clinching RBI double in the bottom of the third inning that put the Trojans ahead of Stetson 3-2. Senior right fielder Jonathan Smithers helped out at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Troy State (27-27) racked up 10 hits and three runs off of Stetson starter Jack Collins (10-2). Collins suffered the loss after pitching the first six and one-thirds innings.

Troy State will play again tomorrow in its third game of the tournament. The Trojans are set to play at 3 p.m. on Friday against an opponent to be determined by the results of the two remaining games on Thursday.
