Andrea Ellis scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh as the Charles Henderson High School Lady Trojans came from behind to defeat the Northview Lady Cougars 7-6 in fast pitch softball action at the Troy SportsPlex late Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Trojans earned only their fourth victory in its last 11 games improving to 16-15 heading into this weekend’s six team sectional tournament. The Lady Trojans open up tournament action on Friday night hosting Greenville at 6:30 p.m. at the SportsPlex on Field 8.
Like most of its games played during the second half of the regular season, CHHS
fell behind 4-0 after 1 1/2 innings of action. However, the Lady Trojans showed plenty of spark at the plate scoring seven runs in the final five innings to earn the victory.
Leading 1-0 going into the top of the second, the Lady Cougars (8-21) expanded their lead scoring three runs with the key blow coming on a two RBI single by Stephanie Lennon scoring Candace Austin and Christie Wines.
However, the Lady Trojans started to fight back scoring two runs in the bottom of the third cutting the lead in half. With the bases loaded and two outs, Elizabeth Rountree drew an RBI walk scoring Kelly Miller for the first run of the evening. One batter later, CHHS got a huge break when Christine Haug reached on a dropped fly ball in right field by Austin scoring Elizabeth Rountree to cap the inning.
With the score 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth and another stinging defeat looming on the horizon, the Lady Trojans tied the game at 5-5 scoring three runs off losing pitcher Wimes. After Haug led off with a two bagger, she reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Laura Wesley’s RBI double. After the bases were loaded with two outs, Rountree came through with a clutch two RBI single scoring Lanell Boswell and Emily Watkins to cap the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Northview led 6-5 when Chelsea Howard started the rally with a double into the left center field gap before advancing to third on a bad throw. Two batters later, Ellis singled up the middle chasing home Howard to tie the game at 6-6. After Ellis stole third on a double steal, she scored the game winning run with two outs on a wild pitch to end the contest.
The Lady Trojans finished with six hits but made the most of their opportunities throughout the game to come out with the victory. Six different players had one hit apiece for CHHS to provide a balanced attack. Amanda Floyd didn’t have a hit, but scored one run in the winning effort for CHHS.
Should CHHS defeat Greenville Friday, they will advance to play Valley Saturday morning at 9 a.m. If CHHS loses, they will play at 10:30 a.m. in the losers bracket against either Carroll-Ozark, Russell County or Eufaula on Field 7.
