Our View

We applaud the efforts of those who volunteer to fight fires and serve their communities as emergency medical technicians.

Volunteer firefighters from Brundidge and Hamilton Crossroads quickly went to work to bring a fire at Ellis Metals under control Wednesday afternoon.

On Saturday, those firefighters and others will be together again. This time for fun and fellowship, rather than fighting fires.

The Pike County Firefighters Association hosts the annual Firefighters Day for those who risk life and limb and the family members who support their dangerous work.

It’s a wonderful thing these caring men and women can have a chance to enjoy each other’s company and some healthy competition.

During the day, volunteer firefighters will compete in the hose lay, water on the roof competition and airpack relay. Trophies will be awarded in each event and for overall score.

The Firefighter of the Year and the president’s awards will also be given out during the day-long event.

But, those who get up in the middle of the night to save lives and property don’t get enough recognition.

If we could, we would give members of the nine volunteer fire departments Banks, Brundidge, Goshen, Hamilton Crossroads, Henderson, Meeksville, Saco and Springhill all a trophy for always being there to answer a call for help.

Those at Ellis Metals would likely agree since the fire was under control in 10 minutes and completely out in half an hour.

We applaud the efforts of those who volunteer to fight fires and serve their communities as emergency medical technicians. We give a hand to you who offer a hand to us in times of need.
